Analysis
Sony's requirements: PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe, 5,500 MB/s+ read recommended, and a heatsink or heat spreader with total height no more than 11.25mm. Check Sony's support page before buying.
Our take: a bare 1TB drive plus a slim heatsink is the value route. The 990 PRO heatsink edition is the zero-fuss route but costs a lot more right now.
Reliability and upgrade notes: the PS5 M.2 cover screw is small and easy to strip, so use a correctly sized Phillips #1 driver. Power the console fully off (not rest mode) before opening it.
Verdict
The SN7100 plus a slim heatsink is the value route. The 990 PRO heatsink edition is the fit-and-forget route.
